Travelling south through the Gorge of Kourtaliotis River we reach the south coast and the Holy Stavropegiac  and Patriarchal Monastery of  St. John the Theologian, known as the Monastery of Preveli. Located on the rocky hills of the southern Rethymnon prefecture, it dates back to 16th century and has played a very important role in the fights against the Turks and during the German occupation, by giving refuge to several Greek and foreign soldiers who took part in the Battle of Crete. The monastery has twenty cells, a library and a museum where vestments, sacred vessels and important religious relics are exhibited. In the outdoor fountain you’ll see a carved inscription, dating back in 1701.

Leaving the monastery and only a few minutes away, we reach the footpath which will take us to the beach of Preveli for a refreshing swim. Here the tall steep Kourtaliotiko Gorge meets the Libyan Sea, creating a cool lagoon surrounded by palm trees and oleanders, making this beach a tropical paradise. At the exit of the river, a sandy beach with pebbles and sand is formed, with sea water being very cool due to the river. The area belongs to the “natura” network and it is protected.

Passing the villages of Spili and Tympaki we reach the small fishing village of Matala with its beautiful beach. Here you have time for lunch, swim in the clear sparkling water, sunbathe on the golden sand and explore the pre-historic caves in the cliffs on the beach that were once the homes of the early Christians on the island. During the 60’s and 70’s the caves hosted an international Hippie’s community known worldwide.
